Gay Marriage Bill Passes In CA.

California legislature has passed a bill to allow gay marriages in the state:

In a stunning come-from-behind victory, California’s gay allies in the state Legislature have sent a bill to legalize same-sex marriage to the desk of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Led by San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno, the bill passed the state Senate last week by one vote, but was expected to have a tough time passing the Assembly. On Tuesday night, however, the marriage bill squeaked through the lower house without a vote to spare.

Its passage makes California the first state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage through legislative action, a historic first that may well be nullified by a veto pen.

However I think AH-nold will veto the bill once it reaches his desk. He’s pretty conservative and I can’t imagine him letting this pass.

I can actually understand why people don’t want to legalize gay marriage, I get where they’re coming from. They somehow think that if they legalize this, they’ll be public gay sex in the streets and queers holding hands at the mall, etc. Basically they’re afraid. However I wish they’d understand where we’re coming from.

If my partner has brain damage and we’ve been together 50 years and he’s a vegetable, I’m not allowed to make the decision to pull the plug or to keep him alive because I’m not legally his spouse. Or if I get a job and they have great insurance benefits and my partner has no health insurance, I’m not allowed to put him on my policy because we aren’t married. I could go on….there are many benefits that married couples have that same sex couples do not. I would even be willing to compromise, don’t legalize gay marriage as a religious right but do legalize gay marriage as a legal right. I would want my partner to be recognized legally as my partner and get all the same legal benefits as straight married couples. It’s only fair! We are humans too!

Anyhow good luck to those in the State Of California with this new marriage bill, we’ll be rooting for you!
