Apparently basketball star, Shaquille O’Neal, is looking for another career. Shaq has been in training to be a reserve police officer in the City of Miami where he lives. As he was driving in his car, he witnessed an assult that was preceeded by some anti-gay slurs and broke up the fight.

Miami Heat center Shaquille O’Neal sprang into action last weekend when he saw a man allegedly assault a gay couple.

Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, the 7-foot-1 basketball player was driving in South Beach when he saw a passenger in a car yell anti-gay slurs at the couple before throwing a bottle and hitting one of them.

O’Neal sped after the car, flagging down an officer who later arrested Michael Gonzalez, 18, on charges of aggravated assault and assault with a deadly weapon. The driver of the car was not charged.

The man who was hit with the bottle was not hurt seriously.

O’Neal, who hopes to be a police chief or county sheriff, released a statement about the incident. “For this incident I don’t want to be credited as an individual who does police work. I want to be credited as a Miami Beach police officer.”

Miami police spokesman Robert Hernandez said O’Neal has completed the training to be a reserve officer, but has not taken the state certification exam yet.

“He should be certified any day now,” Hernandez told the Miami Herald. “He’s already been fitted for a uniform.”

“I think he’s a great guy and he was just doing the right thing,” said Cyd Zeigler, co-founder of the LGBT Web site OutSports.

Zeigler says although several athletes have made headlines for making anti-gay slurs, O’Neal has kept a low-profile on LGBT issues. “His attitude about life has always been live and let live and do what you want. He’s a fun-loving guy who’s trying to do the right thing.”

“He exhibited the best qualities of law enforcement: he showed a blind eye,” Zeigler pointed out. “It didn’t matter who was being wronged.”

“We live in a culture where we are still surprised when a heterosexual sports icon steps up for us,” said Shawna Virago, the domestic violence program director of Community United Against Violence. “We can now say, ‘Shaq has our back.’”

Good for you Shaq! And for that, I might actually take up watching basketball!

A Florida man staged a fake anti-gay hate crime in which he set fire to his mobile home and spray painted the words “Die Fag” on the steps. It later came out that he set fire to his own house and spray painted the words himself in order to get insurance money.

In what authorities believe is an apparent insurance scam, a gay man in central Florida is under arrest for staging what originally looked like an anti-gay hate crime.

Polk County fire investigators said Christopher Michael Robertson confessed to setting fire to the mobile home he shared with his partner in Lakeland, Fla., this past July. Robertson confessed while in jail on an unrelated incident.

Back in July, the couple said they had been out shopping and came back to find their burnt home at the King Manor Mobile Home Park. “Die Fag” had allegedly been written on the stairs leading into their home. Several expensive items, including a laptop computer and television, were also missing. At the time the two told police neighbors had harassed them and made anti-gay threats in the past. The two had been living in the mobile home park for about a year and a half.

Upon investigating, fire inspectors did find accelerants at the scene, but they did not know exactly how the fire started. Neighbors interviewed in the investigation said they hadn’t actually seen anyone start the fire, nor had they seen anything unusual at the mobile home.

In the course of investigating the incident, Polk County investigators said Robertson admitted he set the fire because he wanted the insurance money. He also admitted to taking the electronics. Robertson put some items in storage and sold the rest. He filed an insurance claim for the valuables and for the fire on July 25 with Citizen’s Insurance. There is no word on how much he expected to gain from the incident.

People like this should be shot. Hate crimes are not to be taken lightly, there are people out there who have given their life because a person hated them due to their sexual orientation. For this scumbag to fake such a trauma is completely dispicable. I hope he’s in jail for a looooong time!!

A coffee cup featuring a quote from a gay author has been pulled off the shelves of Baylor University, which is a Baptist College.

The Starbucks at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, has pulled coffee cups featuring an author’s quote about growing up gay.

The quote comes from novelist Armistead Maupin, who gained fame through his “Tales of the City” series.

The quote on the cups reads: “My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don’t make that mistake yourself. Life’s too damn short.”

Aramark, the dining contractor, pulled the cups from the campus store after an e-mail said the quote was inappropriate at a Baptist university.

Now is that really appropriate? The author was just revealing his feelings and stating a fact, I don’t see where the cup had to be pulled. I’m sure Baylor has some GLBT students, what message is that sending to them? Shame on you Baylor University!
