Connecticut is the newest state to offer same-sex civil unions as of October 1st. It seems like all of the states of New England are the first to recognize gay couples’ marital rights. Currently Vermont and Massachusetts have the same laws in place.

HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut joins Vermont on Saturday as the only states offering same-sex civil unions, but the day may pass with only a few raised glasses of champagne as the first gay couples exchange vows.

Because Oct. 1 falls on a Saturday, only a handful of town clerks’ offices plan to be open. Gay rights activists know of some planned ceremonies that day — including one officiated by Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy, who’s running for governor — but don’t know how many couples will race to apply for civil unions.

“Saturday is going to be a landmark day in the civil rights movement in Connecticut,” said state Sen. Andrew McDonald, D-Stamford, one of a handful of openly gay legislators in Connecticut’s General Assembly.

But the law is also creating confusion with some employers who will be required to extend health benefits to same-sex couples.

“I think employers are going to start getting requests (for benefits) as soon as Monday. And they’re not prepared,” said Bruce Barth, an employee benefits attorney at Robinson and Cole in Hartford.

Connecticut’s law passed in April, making it the first state to recognize same-sex unions without court intervention. Laws in Vermont and Massachusetts, which allows gay couples to marry, were created as a result of legal action. In California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger followed through on his promise Thursday to veto a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

Connecticut will recognize Vermont’s civil unions but officials are still researching other states’ domestic partnership laws and civil unions granted in foreign countries. But it will not recognize same-sex marriages because its law specifies that marriage is between a man and a woman, a distinction that angers some couples.

Some gay rights activists are pissed that this is not the same thing as a same sex marriage. I tell them “hey at least you’re getting some recognition by the government!”. Now same sex civil union couples will be able to get the same insurance and legal benefits that married couples have enjoyed in the past. Progress is being made, celebrate it don’t criticize it!

A 14 year old girl was expelled from a private Christian school because she has two lesbian mothers. What kind of thing is this to teach our children? The girl is loved, isn’t she? Then what difference does it make! How can adults sleep at night teaching hate to our children!

ONTARIO, Calif. – A 14-year-old student was expelled from a Christian school because her parents are lesbians, the school’s superintendent said in a letter.

Shay Clark was expelled from Ontario Christian School on Thursday.

“Your family does not meet the policies of admission,” Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote to Tina Clark, the girl’s biological mother.

Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices “immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship,” The Los Angeles Times reported in Friday’s edition.

Stob could not be reached for comment by the newspaper. Shay and her parents said they won’t fight the ruling.

School administrators learned of the parents’ relationship this week after Shay was reprimanded for talking to the crowd during a football game, Tina Clark said.

Clark and her partner have been together 22 years and have two other daughters, ages 9 and 19.

A gay legal group called “Lambda Legal” is expressing their concern over newly nominated judge John Roberts as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Lambda Legal came out against the nomination of Judge John Roberts as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. In a prepared statement, the LGBT community legal advocates said Roberts’ unresponsive answers during three days of Senate hearings left too many open questions.

“Having carefully monitored the testimony during those hearings,” Lambda said, “we have reached the unavoidable conclusion that Judge Roberts, despite being given every opportunity, has failed to demonstrate that he is committed to fairness and equal rights for all Americans.”

Lambda specifically cited the nominee’s failure to comment on whether privacy rights extend to women, gays and other minority groups, as well as his ambiguous position on the power of Congress to outlaw discrimination.

Well, duh! Did they think with an appointment by ultra conservative, George Bush, this guy would be a radical liberal? Times are about to change, my friends. With Bush in the White House for another 4 years, he had the power to change the entire dynamic of the Supreme Court by being able to nominate two new judges. We’re in for some tough roads ahead of us with this new conservative wave to come over the Supreme Court for the next 20-30 years now. The next thing you know, porn will be illegal…..

I was thinking the other day when I was at a business meeting about handshakes, I think what got me thinking was I got to meet a couple of guys; one that was shaking my hand way too hard and the second guy not hard enough.

As I sat down I was not really paying attention to the meeting, I don’t remember why. I just seemed to spend my time contemplating handshakes. I narrowed down to five basic handshakes. Two are great. Three are of the devil.

The 5 different handshakes:

The Limp Fish – If you’re sticking your hand out there to simply be squeezed, then you are a little creepy. A good, solid, firm handshake. It’ll do wonders for your self-esteem.

The Big Dick – There are the boneheads that squeeze too hard. You tend to find this from men who wear wife-beater T-shirts and/or snake skin boots. This handshake is predominately found East of the Mississippi and is usually an attempt to hide the existence of a small genital member.

Those are two unacceptable handshakes.

The Firm Handshake – This is your goal. In a forward movement, arm extended, palm to the left, contact. Wait for it. Thumbs lock, squeeze. Not too hard. Not too soft. Successful handshake established!

The Charmer – This is more a pre-50′s and/or European handshake but can still be very effective when used at the right time. Hand extends, palm to the left, thumbs lock. Light squeeze and twist until your hand is on bottom then pull. You bring the woman’s (or mans) hand to your lips and lightly kiss.

Warning: If you use this technique with a dude, there’s a chance you’ll get belted.

And this brings us to the final handshake. That which Satan himself uses on a regular basis.

The Premature Ejaculatory Handshake – I know you’ve experienced it. You go for the handshake but the “squeeze” comes too fast. Thumbs never locked. You find your fingers in a clasp. You have no control. You are at the mercy of your acquaintance. You are incomplete.

I used to wonder… what did I do wrong? How did I screw it up? Because I can’t recall ever squeezing someone’s fingers short of the thumbs locking. So clearly I must have been doing something wrong to allow myself to get boinked in the middle of the handshake.

Ahh, but with age comes experience and with experience comes knowledge.

I now realize that I was not screwing up after all. Because I never squeezed early. If your fingers get caught half in and half out of a handshake…it wasn’t you! You did nothing wrong! Your partner in this unspoken bonding premature’d.

You did right…you were waiting for the thumbs to lock before going for the squeeze! It’s your partner in the handshake that came too fast!

Why? I don’t know. Nervousness seems the best bet. Perhaps you intimidate. Perhaps there are homophobic issues and your partner in the handshake simply wants to get in and out.

For now, if you find yourself catching an unsuspecting handshake victim’s fingers in a vice… then stop it. Take a breath. Wait for the thumbs to lock, then squeeze!
